Men’s Health Doctor’s New Book

Many of our Keogh staff have interests outside of medicine but only one of us is a published author! Dr Peter Burke who consults in the Men’s Health Clinic writes historical fiction. His novel ‘The Drowning Dream’ was shortlisted for the Vogel Australian and the WA Premier’s Literary Award. Now he has published a novel called ‘Wettening Auralia’ which is centred on the famous Mundaring to the Goldfields pipeline engineered by C. Y. O’Connor. If you want to read a new and lively account of the players in this drama, this is it.

A delicious way to support us

We’ve been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill’d Subiaco this March! Local Matters is the Grill’d community donation program that sees each Grill’d restaurant donate $500 back into the community every month. The donation is split between 3 local community groups $300 / $100 / $100. The group with the most tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation. Obviously we’d love to receive the $300 donation. Any money that we recieve off donations goes directly into supporting our research programs. Examples of our research include:  Intellectually disabled women, particularly those who don’t live in the community, […]

Reading Food Labels

By Stuckey • February 17th, 2016

Trying to understand food labels can be pretty daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the information you see on packets, jars and cans in the supermarket. Thankfully, there are a few key pieces of information that can help you to quickly make healthy and informed choices. Nutrition content claims – what’s allowed? The first thing to remember is that food manufacturers want you to buy their products. They invest huge amounts of time and money in marketing their brands. A “fat free” product may have no fat, but be packed with sugar to make it more enticing to […]

When Love Doesn’t Work: Sexual disorders

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching,  many people are reflecting on their own issues with their relationships. We look back on the initial days of romance with fondness and wonder why things are no longer the same. We ponder if we should bring up all those niggling little annoyances – the lateness, the obsession with their phone, your waning sex life. Like fighting about their family, experiencing problems with your sex life is so widespread as to be practically a hallmark of a long relationship. But while some waning in sexual desire is a normal part of a relationship and sex may disappear all together during difficult or […]

We recently have received our first review on Doctoralia for our Dr Nicole Opie. The reviewer gave her five stars and appreciated that “she was very attentive and very through and all follow ups were excellent. Motivation for the new year

By Stuckey • January 27th, 2016

It’s that time of year again, the festive season is over and everyone’s attention is focused on their goals for the year ahead. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to break out of a rut and motivate yourself to make positive changes in your life. You may have written a two-page list of goals but just remember that changing habits takes work and determination. After all, how many times have we decided to give up chocolate or that daily muffin, only to fall at the first hurdle and then find ourselves on a guilt trip? Rather than jump headfirst […]

Clinical trials are safe, but you can make them safer

By Stuckey • January 20th, 2016

You may have seen the news that a clinical trial participant in France has died and that 4 others were hospitalised.   This is obviously a terrible event, our understanding is it was unexpected and authorities are working to determine if there was any wrongdoing. The question on many of our patient’s minds may be was this an isolated event or are clinical trials inherently unsafe? The answer is a bit of both. Events such as what happened in France are rare. Such an event had never before happened in France and worldwide the last similar incident was 9 years ago. However […]

Sperm Donation: A priceless gift

By Stuckey • December 9th, 2015

When we think of Christmas, we think of giving and of family. It is for this reason that we would like you to think about sperm donation. Sperm donation is one of the most priceless gifts someone can give. It is giving hope and granting someone’s dreams.  It is, as one former recipient put it, ‘bringing joy into a dark place’. Many recipients of sperm donation would never have the chance to have a family without donors. They usually have no other medical or technological solution. Although, adoption is often suggested, improved social and economic conditions mean very few children (less than twenty a year) […]
