Endocrinologists

Clinical Professor Bronwyn Stuckey AM BA MBBS FRACP Medical Director

Consulting hours:    Wednesday 9:00am – 4:00pm | Thursday 2:00pm – 4:30pm

Professor Stuckey took over as medical director at the Keogh Institute in 1996. She is a clinical professor at UWA and consultant endocrinologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Her areas of interest are reproductive endocrinology in men and women, thyroid dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome, and calcium metabolism. She is a Past President of the Australasian Menopause Society and a Life Member of the Endocrine Society of Australia. Professor Stuckey is lead investigator on most of our clinical research trials.

Clinical Professor John Walsh MBBS FRACP PhD

Consulting hours:    Tuesday 2:00pm – 4:30pm

Professor Walsh is a clinical professor at UWA and consultant endocrinologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He is recognised internationally for his research into thyroid disease. He also specialises in metabolic bone disease, calcium disorders, pituitary and adrenal disease.

Dr Nely Shrestha Khatri MBBS FRACP
Consulting hours:    Tuesday 8:00am – 12:00am

Dr. Shrestha Khatri completed her endocrine training in Perth.  She holds a consultant endocrinologist position at Fiona Stanley Hospital. She has had additional training in Obstetric Medicine, working at King Edward Hospital for Women.  She enjoys all aspects of general endocrinology including thyroid, pituitary and adrenal disorders. Her special areas of interest are women’s health, endocrine disorders in pregnancy, bone health and type 1 diabetes. Dr Shrestha Khatri also speaks Nepali and Hindi.

Dr Nicole LaFontaine MBBS FRACP

Dr Lafontaine is an endocrinologist who completed her endocrine training in Melbourne at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Eastern Health. She is interested in all aspects of clinical endocrinology, with particular interests in thyroid disorders, metabolic bone disorders, diabetes, obesity and endocrine disorders after cancer treatment.

She has been involved in research in diabetes, pituitary, parathyroid and thyroid disease which she has presented at both national and international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. She is currently further advancing her research into the epigenetics of thyroid function, Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and the associations between thyroid function and cognition. Dr Lafontaine also speaks Spanish.

Dr Rhonda Maguire MBBS FRACP FRCPA

Dr Maguire has dual specialist qualifications in both endocrinology and clinical biochemistry. She is a consultant pathologist at PathWest at QEII Medical Centre. She is interested in calcium metabolism and osteoporosis, thyroid disease, pituitary disorders, adrenal disorders and PCOS.

Dr Jennifer Ng MBBS FRACP
Consulting hours:    Thursday 9:00am – 12:00pm

Dr Jennifer Ng has clinical interests in reproductive endocrinology and women’s health. She regularly manages female androgen excess, menopausal symptoms, menstrual disturbance, and subfertility. She also provides care for patients with general endocrine disorders including type 2 diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, thyroid, adrenal and pituitary disease.

A UWA graduate, she completed her Physician Training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and Endocrinology training at Royal Perth and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospitals. In 2008 she undertook a clinical and research fellowship in Obstetric Medicine at the B.C. Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. She has additional experience in clinical biochemistry.

Dr Nicole Opie BSc MBBS FRACP
Consulting hours:    Monday 9:00am – 4:30pm | Wednesday 9:00am -4:30pm

Dr Opie is a consultant endocrinologist. She undertook her endocrinology advanced training in Canberra and Sydney, with additional experience in androgen excess disorders (including PCOS) in Athens, Greece. She enjoys all aspects of general endocrinology including metabolic bone disorders, diabetes, thyroid health, pituitary and adrenal disease. She is also interested in women’s health, PCOS, infertility and endocrine disorders in pregnancy.

Dr Melissa Tanner MBBS FRACP FRCPA

Dr Tanner has dual qualifications in Endocrinology and Clinical Biochemistry. She has a consultant pathologist appointment at PathWest Clinical Biochemistry. She is interested in PCOS, thyroid disease, calcium and bone health, pituitary and adrenal disorders.

Dr Kalani Kahapola Arachchige   MBBS FRACP FRCPA MAACB
Consulting hours: Tuesday 1:30pm – 4:30pm

Dr Kahapola has dual qualifications in Endocrinology and Clinical biochemistry. She enjoys all aspects of general endocrinology and has special interest in female reproductive endocrinology, menopause management, PCOS, thyroid, osteoporosis, calcium metabolism and type 2 diabetes management. She also consults at a private practice in Osborne Park. Dr Kahapola also speaks Sinhalese.

Dr Karen Rothacker MBBS FRACP
Consulting hours:   Friday 8:30am – 12:30pm

Dr Rothacker is a consultant endocrinologist who also works at Royal Perth Hospital. Dr Rothacker received her fellowship in adult endocrinology but completed a year of endocrinology training at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and will see adolescent patients (>14 years of age) pending review of referral. She is interested in all aspects of general endocrinology including reproductive endocrinology, thyroid disease, calcium and bone health, diabetes, pituitary and adrenal conditions and transgender hormone management (transgender patient referrals >18 years of age).


 Men’s Health

Dr John Caldow MBBS

Consulting hours:  Tuesday 8:30am – 12:00pm

Formerly from Busselton, Dr Caldow is interested in all aspects of men’s health and is particularly dedicated to the continuance of male health via our ‘well men’s checks’. Dr Caldow is also a co-investigator on our diabetes clinical trials.


Dr Peter Burke MBBS FRACGP DTM&H FACTM CIME FECSM

Consulting hours:       Thursday 8:30am – 12:00pm

Dr Peter Burke has wide experience in general practice in rural WA and metropolitan Perth. His particular interests are travel medicine, occupational health and men’s health. He has been involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He has been central to preparing medical students for overseas electives and has been an examiner for the College of General Practice. In 2016 he was admitted as a Fellow of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine. Dr Burke is also a published author of historical fiction.

Dr Kowal is experienced in women’s health and is particularly interested in women’s sexual health. She is also committed to meeting the special requirements of women with disabilities and runs one of the only dedicated clinics for this in Perth.

Counsellor

Michelle Stuckey BA(Hons) MClinPsych

Michelle is our RTC approved counsellor and Clinical Psychologist (Registrar). She is available for counselling relating to all aspects of fertility treatment (e.g. donor conception, sperm donation, surrogacy and fertility preservation before gender transition). Michelle’s other interests and experience include peri and post-natal, infant and child mental health.


Research Staff

Lee Ann Mahoney RN Midwife

Lee is a registered nurse and midwife. She has a special interest in women’s gynaecological health and has been working in the research area since 1999. Lee has completed trials into all aspects of women’s health ranging from polycystic ovarian syndrome, non hormonal treatments for menopausal hot flushes and treatments for problematic menstrual bleeding. She is currently running trials into premature ejaculation and pre-diabetes (insulin resistance).


Smilja Dragovic B Psych

Smilja is a psychologist who has been working in research since 2001. She is currently running trials on human growth hormone deficiency and diabetes.
